What Division Does

Division is sharing fairly. Twelve cookies shared among four friends means everyone gets three - twelve divided by four equals three. The first number is what you start with, the second number is how many groups, and the answer is how much each group gets.

Division and multiplication are best friends, working in opposite directions. If three times four equals twelve, then twelve divided by four equals three. Every multiplication fact secretly knows a division fact, so learning one helps you with the other.

Sometimes things do not share perfectly. Thirteen cookies among four friends gives everyone three, with one cookie left over. That leftover is called a remainder, and it tells you the sharing was close to fair but not exact.
