How to Write a Great Paragraph

A paragraph is a group of sentences about one idea. It starts with a topic sentence that tells the reader what the paragraph is about, like a sign at the start of a trail. "Dogs make wonderful helpers" is a topic sentence - now the reader knows what to expect.

The middle sentences are the supporting details. They give examples, facts, or reasons that prove or explain the topic sentence. If your topic is dogs as helpers, your details might mention guide dogs, farm dogs, and dogs that comfort people in hospitals.

The last sentence wraps things up. A good ending sentence reminds the reader of the main idea without simply repeating it. When you can write one strong paragraph, you can write ten - and ten strong paragraphs make an essay.
