A clock is a machine for measuring the day. The short hand points at the hour, the long hand counts the minutes, and together they tell you exactly where you are in the day. When the long hand points at 12, it is exactly o-clock. At 6, thirty minutes have passed - half past the hour.
Time breaks into friendly pieces: 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day. Morning hours run from midnight to noon, and the hours after noon keep counting - 1 in the afternoon is 13 on a 24-hour clock. Quarter past means 15 minutes after, quarter to means 15 minutes before the next hour.
Managing time is a superpower that starts small. Knowing that breakfast takes 10 minutes and the walk to school takes 15 means you can work backward from the school bell and never rush. Grown-ups call this planning, and it is really just telling time with a purpose.
