Maps and Perspectives

A map shows places, but every map makes choices. A world map can put one region in the center and show another near the edge. Some maps show roads; others show languages, rivers, or rainfall.

Check the title, date, legend, and scale. A map of languages may show broad areas, but it cannot tell you which languages every person in a city speaks. Real communities are more detailed than colored regions.

Compare two maps of the same place to ask new questions. Who made them? What do they leave out? A map is a tool for learning, not a complete story about the people who live there.
