Cooking is one of the most useful skills on Earth - it turns ingredients into meals and kitchens into the heart of a home. Every cook, from kid beginners to restaurant chefs, follows the same first rule: safety before everything. A safe kitchen is a happy kitchen.
The safety basics are simple habits. Wash your hands before you touch food. Keep a grown-up nearby for anything hot or sharp. Carry knives pointing down, by the handle, and never run with one. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so they cannot be bumped. Clean spills right away before someone slips. And tie back long hair and roll up sleeves so nothing dangles into the food or the flame.
Once safety is a habit, the fun begins. Start with no-cook recipes - sandwiches, salads, fruit plates - then graduate to supervised stove work. Learn to measure with cups and spoons, read a recipe all the way through before starting, and clean as you go. Every great cook started exactly where you are: washing their hands and reading a recipe.
