A need is something important for health and safety, such as food, water or shelter. A want is something you might enjoy but could do without, such as a second toy. The same item can serve different purposes: a warm coat may be a need in winter, while a fancy extra coat may be a want.
When resources are limited, choosing one thing means giving up something else. If you have time for one activity after dinner, you might read or play a game. If a family has a spending plan, it first makes room for essential bills and food, then decides what can be saved or spent on extras.
People make these choices in different circumstances. Do not judge someone by what they buy or cannot buy. Asking what matters most, checking the real cost, and waiting before a big decision can help anyone make a careful choice.
