Engineers solve problems by building and testing ideas. Start by asking what your design needs to do. A paper bridge, for example, might need to hold a small book between two blocks.
Build one version, then test it the same way each time. If it bends, notice where and think about changing one thing: folding the paper, adding a support, or shortening the span.
An unsuccessful test gives you information. Record what changed and try again. The goal is not a perfect first try; it is learning which choices make the design work better.
