The Five Food Groups

Everything you eat belongs to a team called a food group, and there are five of them. Fruits and vegetables are the vitamin teams. Grains - bread, rice, pasta, oats - are the energy team. Proteins like beans, eggs, fish, and chicken are the building team, repairing muscles and helping you grow. Dairy like milk, cheese, and yogurt is the bone team, full of calcium.
A balanced day borrows from every team. Each group brings something the others do not, so leaving one out leaves a gap: skip grains and your energy dips, skip protein and growing slows down. Half your plate as fruits and vegetables is the simple rule of thumb, with grains, protein, and dairy filling in the rest.
Treats are part of life too - birthday cake is not a villain. Balance is about the pattern of your whole week, not one perfect plate. When most of your meals borrow from all five groups, a treat here and there fits just fine.
