Strategy: Thinking Ahead

Strategy is the art of seeing the future of a game before it happens. A beginner looks at the move in front of them. A strategist asks: if I do this, what will my opponent do, and what will I do next? Each layer of looking ahead makes you stronger, and even one extra layer beats most players.

Every strategy game shares the same secret questions. What do I want? What does my opponent want? What will this move cost me later? In tic-tac-toe, taking the center controls more paths to victory. In checkers, keeping pieces together protects them. In any game, the player who thinks about position - not just the next move - usually wins.

The best strategists also plan for things to go wrong. They ask what-if about their own plans: what if my opponent blocks me here? Having a backup plan means a surprise is never a disaster. This skill escapes the game board fast - packing a bag, saving allowance, and solving homework problems all reward the same think-ahead brain.
