Probability: Chance You Can Count

Probability is the mathematics of maybe. It answers questions like how likely is rain, or what are my chances of winning, with actual numbers. A coin flip has two equally likely outcomes - heads or tails - so the probability of heads is 1 out of 2, written as one half or 50 percent.

Counting outcomes is the whole trick. Roll a die and there are 6 equally likely faces, so rolling a 4 has probability 1 out of 6, and rolling an even number - 2, 4, or 6 - has probability 3 out of 6, which is one half. The formula is friendly: count the outcomes you want, divide by all the outcomes possible.

Probability explains why games stay exciting and why some bets are bad ideas. A lottery with millions of possible tickets gives you millions-to-one odds, which is why almost nobody wins. Understanding chance does not remove luck - it teaches you when luck is on your side and when a game is quietly stacked against you.
